Dr. Imani Woody's journey with Mary's House for Older Adults began with her vision to create safe, affirming, affordable housing for LGBTQ+/SGL older adults in Washington, DC and shared around her kitchen table with women who understood. What started as a dream has grown into the completion of the country's first affordable LGBTQ+/SGL affirming communal living space for adults 60 and over. And an internationally recognized organization addressing the needs of LGBTQ+/SGL elders. The 15-room Anacostia Road residence in Southeast Washington was made possible in large part through Dr. Woody's tireless advocacy and tenacity.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Woody has been a nationally recognized champion for women, people of color, and the LGBTQ/SGL community, oft being the lone voice representing the interests of LGBTQ/SGL community. She brought her expertise to the 2015 White House Summit on LGBT elder housing development, participated as a member of VP Kamala Harris' 2022 LGBT leadership roundtable, served as a Commissioner appointed by DC Mayors Vincent Gray and Muriel Bowser, and was honored with the prestigious AARP Purpose Prize — a testament to the profound impact of her life's work. As a life coach, author, educator, and community organizer, she has touched countless lives through her signature program, Living Life Like It's Golden.
Like any champion, Dr. Imani is closing this chapter at the top of her game....and while she no longer fills the position of President/CEO, she remains on the Board of Directors of Mary's House for Older Adults.
